BCSE exam dates: how often is the BCSE offered and how do you choose your date?

Unlike some licensing exams, the BCSE is not tied to one or two exam days a year. Official sources describe it as offered on a continuous basis at Prometric test centres, so you choose a date that suits you once you are approved to test. That freedom makes your own planning more important.

How often can you write the BCSE?

The NEB and the AVMA both describe BCSE testing as continuous, at Prometric test centres in Canada, the United States and some other countries. Candidates register with the ECFVG or the NEB first, then book a seat. Only one BCSE seat per testing window can be reserved through either office.

For ECFVG candidates, the AVMA has said a candidate may attempt the BCSE up to three times within 12 months, with a wait of about four months between attempts after a fail. Read the BCSE retake policy guide, and confirm the current rule in the bulletin because policies can change.

BCSE vs NAVLE dates

The NAVLE is different. ICVA schedules it in fixed testing windows with application deadlines. For the 2026 to 2027 cycle three windows are listed: October to November 2026, March 2027 and July to August 2027. How to choose your BCSE date

Count back from a realistic study plan. Most candidates choose between one and four months. Use the 30, 60 and 90-day plans.
Sit a full timed paper first. If you cannot finish 225 questions in 220 minutes with good accuracy yet, move the date back.
Leave room for a retake. Because there is a waiting period after a fail, do not book your first attempt so close to a personal deadline that one fail ruins your plan.
Avoid your busiest weeks. Work, travel and visa deadlines all eat study time.
Book early. Seats at your preferred centre can fill up.
