How to pass the BCSE the first time: seven habits that work

Updated 20 October 2026

Passing the BCSE first time is mostly about habits, not talent. The candidates who pass tend to do the same few things. The ones who fail usually skip one or two of them.

1. Test yourself before you read

Start with a mixed set of questions from every subject. The result shows where your marks are leaking, so reading time goes where it earns the most.

2. Cover every subject, not your favourites

The exam is broad. A weak spot in a smaller subject costs the same marks as one in a big subject. Check each subject against the list on our BCSE subjects page.

3. Read every explanation

Read the explanation even when you got the answer right. Guessed answers hide gaps.

4. Clear your missed questions

Keep every wrong answer in a list and redo it until you get it right, then remove it. What is left is your personal revision list.

5. Practise images little and often

Radiographs, photographs and slides are a large share of the paper. See the BCSE image questions guide.

6. Train for time

225 questions in 220 minutes leaves under a minute per question. Build up to full papers and learn your pace. See test day tips.

7. Plan backwards from your date

Pick your date, count the weeks and follow a schedule. Start with the 30, 60 and 90-day plans.
