BCSE retake policy: how many attempts and how long do you wait?

Updated 20 October 2026

Failing the BCSE is stressful, but it is not the end. Here is what the official sources say about retakes, and a practical plan for using the waiting period well.

What the rules say

The AVMA's ECFVG has stated that candidates may attempt the BCSE up to three times (the first attempt and two retakes) within a 12-month period, and that candidates who fail must wait about four months, or about 120 days, before the next attempt. Those notices are several years old in places, so check the latest candidate bulletin before you plan around them.

If you fail, you retake the entire examination. You do not resit only the domains you did badly in.

You get feedback by domain

Candidates who do not pass receive diagnostic indicators for the domains on the exam. Use them. They tell you where to spend the waiting period.

How to use the waiting period

What most failed attempts have in common

The usual causes are uneven preparation (strong in favourite subjects, weak in others), too little timed practice, and not reviewing mistakes. Our guide on how to pass the BCSE explains how to fix each one.
