How to register for the BCSE: the ECFVG and NEB routes
Updated 20 October 2026
You cannot simply book the BCSE. You first register with one of the two bodies that use it, then follow their steps. Which one you choose depends on where you plan to be licensed.
Route 1: the ECFVG (United States)
The AVMA's ECFVG certification programme for graduates of non-accredited schools has four steps:
- Registration and proof of graduation (your documents are verified).
- Evidence of English language ability.
- The Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination (BCSE).
- A clinical skills assessment, the Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE).
At the time of writing the AVMA lists a programme application fee of $1,400 USD, and a BCSE fee of $250 USD for registrations after 1 January 2026, with extra Prometric charges outside the US and Canada. Fees change, so confirm the current figures on the AVMA site. See the BCSE exam fee and extra charges.
Route 2: the NEB (Canada)
Canada's National Examining Board (NEB) is the route to a Certificate of Qualification, which lets you apply for a licence in any Canadian province. Graduates of non-accredited schools must complete four exams: the BCSE, the NAVLE, the PSA and the CPE. Graduates of accredited schools need only the NAVLE.
You register through the NEB Candidate Portal, create your profile, pay the fee, and submit the documents that match your graduate category. The NEB reviews them and tells you whether you are approved.
Can I use both?
The NEB and the ECFVG accept BCSE and CPE score transfers from each other, so a BCSE pass counts with either. Only one BCSE seat per testing window can be reserved through the two offices, and you cannot hold a CPE seat with both at once.
Before you apply
- Read the current candidate bulletin from start to finish.
- Gather your degree, transcripts and identity documents early. Document checks take time.
- Plan your English test if one is required for you.
- Decide your target BCSE date and work backwards. See how to choose your date.
