The BCSE for international veterinary graduates: a complete roadmap

Updated 20 October 2026

If you qualified outside the United States or Canada, the BCSE is a required step on the road to a licence, not an optional extra. This page puts the whole route in one place so you can see where the BCSE fits and what to plan for.

The two routes side by side

You choose the route by where you plan to be licensed first. The BCSE counts for both, and each body accepts the other's BCSE scores.

Where the BCSE fits

For the ECFVG route, the BCSE is the third step, after your documents and English language ability. You cannot move on to the CPE until you have passed it. See how to register and ECFVG vs NEB.

How long to prepare

This is our general guidance rather than an official figure. Most candidates plan one to four months. If you have been out of study for a while, or your training covered different species and drugs, plan toward the longer end. Use the 30, 60 and 90-day plans and sit a full timed paper before you book.

What to budget

Read the BCSE exam fee and extra charges. The BCSE fee is one cost among several, and testing outside the US and Canada adds Prometric charges.
