NAVLE preparation
What subjects should I read for the NAVLE?
Prepared 23 October 2026 · VetQ
Organise NAVLE preparation using ICVA’s species and competency outlines. The examination is not simply a list of university course names. You need to connect clinical knowledge with the tasks a veterinarian performs and cover species beyond those you see most often.
Make a two-dimensional study map
Create a table with species down one side and tasks across the top: gathering and interpreting information, prevention, communication and professional decisions. Add cases to the intersections. This reveals gaps that a disease-name checklist may miss.
Use weights without ignoring smaller areas
The official species outline assigns different weights. Use those to guide the broad balance of preparation, then adjust for your weaknesses. Do not interpret a smaller allocation as permission to omit that area entirely.
Include professional and preventive reasoning
Client communication, welfare, public health and professional judgement require decisions as well as factual recall. Practise what you would explain to an owner, what information you need and which action fits the circumstances. Use the current official outline as your coverage reference.
Audit a week of revision
Take the cases you attempted during the last week and label both species and task. A week may appear varied because the diseases differ while still repeating the same species and diagnostic task. Mark gaps in the matrix and choose a practical way to sample them next week. Do not try to fill every cell equally; the official outline and your needs guide the balance. The matrix is a visibility tool, not an alternative blueprint. Repeat the audit periodically so your preferred resources and clinical experience do not silently determine the entire content of your revision.
Check your understanding
You have memorised many canine diseases but have not practised communicating uncertainty or considering prevention. What is missing?
Read the answer and reasoning
Your preparation may cover diagnoses without covering the full range of tasks. Add cases that require explanation, prevention and professional judgement, and check other species in the outline.
