NAVLE preparation
How do I study for the NAVLE while working?
Prepared 23 October 2026 · VetQ
Use a schedule that accounts for work, fatigue and the review time created by practice questions. A sustainable routine should include clinical reasoning, weaker species and periodic pacing work. It should not depend on turning every evening into a long study session.
Assign different tasks to different energy levels
Use short sessions for previous errors and focused cases. Use a longer free block for unfamiliar topics or timed practice. Choose challenging teaching when you can concentrate rather than repeatedly leaving it until after an exhausting shift.
Keep the blueprint visible
Work experience may make your usual species and cases feel easier. Track coverage so your practice does not reproduce only the patients you see at work. Include competencies such as communication and preventive medicine rather than treating them as optional extras.
Use a weekly review
Compare planned and actual hours, recurring errors and unfinished topics. Adjust the next week before backlog becomes unmanageable. If you repeatedly miss long rehearsals, reserve time explicitly; fragmented revision cannot fully test sustained examination pacing.
Use work experience without narrowing revision
After a workday, you may find it useful to review the general principle behind a clinical problem, using anonymised or fictional learning material rather than personal patient details. Then deliberately select a topic outside your everyday caseload for the next focused session. This balances useful clinical familiarity with examination breadth. Keep a separate list of unfamiliar species and tasks so they do not disappear behind the problems you see daily. When time is limited, use a short independent case and explanation rather than passively reading a large chapter. Reserve longer sessions for the gaps that require sustained teaching or rehearsal.
Check your understanding
Your clinic mainly treats dogs and cats, and your practice sets do too. What should you check?
Read the answer and reasoning
Map your work against the entire blueprint and diagnose the areas you rarely encounter. Clinical familiarity is useful, but it is not evidence that the rest of the examination has been covered.
