Is the BCSE hard? What to expect and how long to study
Updated 20 October 2026
Most candidates describe the BCSE as hard, and they are not wrong. But the difficulty comes from a few predictable things, and each one can be trained.
What makes the BCSE hard
- Breadth. It covers many subjects across several species, so a weak area costs marks.
- Image questions. Radiographs, photographs and slides take practice to read quickly.
- Time. 225 questions in 220 minutes leaves under a minute each.
- Unscored questions you cannot spot. 25 of the 225 are unscored pretest items, so every question must be treated as if it counts.
- Question formats. Matching, drag-and-drop and hot-spot questions appear alongside multiple choice.
Why some sites say "about 200 questions"
The official overview says 225 questions, of which 25 are unscored. That leaves 200 scored questions, which may be why some sites describe the exam as about 200 questions. Plan for all 225, because you cannot tell which ones are unscored.
What about pass rates?
We could not find an official published pass rate, so we do not quote one. Be cautious about any site that states a pass rate without a source. A better measure of readiness is your own score on timed, mixed practice.
How long to study
Most candidates plan between one and four months of steady study. A common mistake is to book the exam first and study later. Read how to prepare for the BCSE and pick a plan from the study schedules.
How to make it easier
- Test yourself before you read, so study time goes to your weak subjects.
- Clear a list of the questions you miss until it is empty.
- Practise a few image questions every day.
- Sit at least two full timed papers before the exam.
- Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right.
