BCSE test day tips: timing, pacing and keeping calm for 220 minutes
Updated 20 October 2026
You have 220 minutes for 225 questions, which is a little under a minute each. A simple pacing plan stops time from becoming the hardest question on the paper.
Do the maths before test day
220 minutes divided by 225 questions is about 58 seconds each. Aim for an average of 45 to 50 seconds so you finish with 20 to 30 minutes to return to flagged questions.
A pacing plan
- Answer the question if you know it. If you do not, make your best guess, flag it and move on.
- Never spend more than about two minutes on one question in the first pass.
- Use leftover time for flagged questions, then for a quick check that you answered every item.
- Remember that 25 questions are unscored, so one hard question is never worth panic.
The week before
- Sit one last full timed paper about a week out, then stop adding new material.
- Review your missed list and your shortest notes.
- Check your test centre address, travel time and identification requirements.
The morning of the exam
- Eat and drink as you normally would, and arrive early.
- Take any breaks you are allowed. Short breaks help you stay sharp for the whole session.
- Keep your routine boring. Test day is not the time to try something new.
