How to prepare for the BCSE: a practical, step-by-step guide

Updated 20 October 2026

There is no shortcut to passing the BCSE, but there is a smarter order of work. Most candidates who fail did not lack effort. Their practice never showed them where the marks were leaking. This guide gives you a method that does.

1. Find your starting point

Before you read anything, answer a set of mixed questions across every subject. Do not worry about the score. The aim is to find the subjects where you are weakest.

2. Study by subject, with questions first

Work through one subject at a time. Attempt the questions before you read the notes, then read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right.

Short notes that focus on what is actually tested beat shelves of textbooks. Use a textbook only to fill a specific gap.

3. Keep a list of the questions you miss, and clear it

Every wrong answer points at something you do not yet know. Redo them until each one is right, then remove it from the list. What remains is exactly what you still need to read.

4. Practise image questions on purpose

Do not leave images to the end. Practise reading them little and often so identifying the structure or lesion becomes quick.

5. Do timed papers

The real exam is 225 questions in 220 minutes. Build up from short timed sets to a full paper and sit at least two full-length mocks before the exam.

6. Plan backwards from your exam date

Count the days and split the work across them. Use one of the BCSE study plans.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your starting point, but most candidates plan between one and four months of steady study.

Are practice questions enough to pass the BCSE?

Practice questions with explanations are the most effective single tool because they show you where you are weak. Use short notes or a textbook to fill the gaps.

How many mock exams should I take?

At least two full-length timed papers in the last few weeks, plus shorter timed sets along the way.
