Question 1. The owner of a 4-month-old castrated male pygmy goat calls to report that the goat has been straining for a couple days and today is lethargic and not eating well. Which of the following is the most likely problem?

  1. Urethral obstruction
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Cecal impaction
  4. Anal gland impaction
  5. Constipation
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. Urethral obstruction is very common in goats, especially young castrated males. Some owners may think that the goat is constipated especially when complete obstruction is present. Metabolic consequences of obstruction develop quickly, similarly to that seen in cats, with azotemia and hyperkalemia. Fluid therapy with saline is given in addition to removal of the obstruction. Amputation of the urethral process is the first step, as this is acommon site. Surgical intervention is needed when this does not work.

Question 2. Many colloquial terms persist in equine vet medicine. What are windgalls/windpuffs in horses?

  1. Fluid-filled swellings around the metacarpophalangeal or metatarsophalangeal joints
  2. Necrotic pharyngeal and laryngeal inflammation from Fusobacterium necrophorum infection
  3. Erosive contact lesions on the arytenoid cartilage resulting from arytenoid chondritis
  4. Prominent, nodular lymphoid follicles on the pharyngeal roof of young horses
  5. Periosteal inflammation of the dorsal distal third metacarpal bone and joint capsule
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. Windgalls (also called windpuffs) are fluid filled swellings around the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints. Usually asymptomatic, a blemish that causes no lameness. Arytenoid chondritis can cause protrusion of granulation tissue through the axial surface of one of the arytenoid cartilages, resulting in a contact (kissing) lesion on the contralateral arytenoid cartilage. Prominent, nodular lymphoid follicles on the pharyngeal roof of young horses are called pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia. Usually a normal finding. Inflammation of the periosteum of the dorsal distal third metacarpal bone and the associated metacarpophalangeal joint capsule is called osselets. Infection of the pharynx and larynx with Fusobacterium necrophorum is called necrotic laryngitis (calf diphtheria). A young calf disease, characterized by fever, ptyalism, nasal discharge, inspiratory dyspnea, and stridor.

Question 3. A dog is presented with priapism. What is the problem?

  1. Inability to retract swollen penis
  2. Undescended testicle
  3. Inflammation of the preputial mucosa
  4. Prolonged penile erection
  5. Uncontrolled salivation
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D. Priapism is a prolonged erection in the absence of sexual stimulation. Paraphimosis is the inability to retract a swollen penis into the prepuce. Balanoposthitis is inflammation of the glans penis and preputial mucosa. Posthitis is inflammation of the preputial mucosa.
