RCVS Statutory Membership Exam (SME): what overseas vets need to know
Updated 20 October 2026
If your veterinary degree is not recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the Statutory Membership Exam (SME) is the route to the UK register. It has a written stage and a practical stage. Always check the latest RCVS guidance, because dates and formats change.
How the SME is structured
According to the RCVS, the exam has a written stage and a practical stage:
- Written stage: best-of-five clinical multiple-choice questions in three areas (companion animal, production animal including veterinary public health, and equine), plus an open-book paper on the Code of Professional Conduct.
- Practical stage: an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), a multi-station circuit of clinical and professional scenarios, with a circuit for each area.
- You need a pass in every area to progress, and the RCVS sets each pass mark with a standard-setting method rather than a fixed percentage.
The written papers in numbers
The RCVS guidance for the 2027 exam cycle describes 367 clinical multiple-choice questions: 175 for companion animal, 105 for production animal and 87 for equine. Each clinical paper lasts about 2 hours, the Code of Professional Conduct paper about 2 hours 15 minutes, and negative marking is not applied. Times can vary, so check the current guidance.
Dates and resits
The RCVS describes the written exam as taking place in March with a resit opportunity in May, delivered remotely with live invigilation. The OSCE is usually held in the autumn, and the whole process takes around 15 months. Failed written papers can be resat instead of the whole exam. If you fail the OSCE twice, later attempts start again from the beginning. Check the current guidance for exact dates, fees and deadlines.
The OSCE
Stations last 15 or 20 minutes and cover things like clinical examination, diagnostic and practical procedures, and communication with a client played by an actor. Some use live animals, models or cadavers, and some are outdoors, for example in a barn or stable. The scenarios reflect common general practice work at Day One Competence level.
How to prepare for the written papers
- Practise single-best-answer clinical questions so the format feels natural.
- Read every explanation, keep a list of the questions you miss and clear it.
- Cover all three areas, not only the one you work in, because every area must be passed.
- Sit timed full papers at about 40 seconds a question.
- Read the RCVS guidance for your exam year, including the Code of Professional Conduct for the open-book paper, and learn where each topic sits in it.
- Do the RCVS formative quiz of 110 questions as a cold baseline.
How to prepare for the OSCE
- Practise the skills with real kit, not only by reading: gowning, suturing, bandaging, injections, the anaesthetic machine check, laboratory skills.
- Say what you are doing out loud, because silent competence is hard to mark.
- Learn the automatic-fail habits: safety for you, the animal and the handler comes first.
- Run timed mock circuits with a friend as examiner.
- Rehearse calculations such as fluid rates and drug volumes.
Where VetQ fits
VetQ has a separate RCVS track built around these parts: practice by clinical paper, timed mock papers at the real sizes, cattle and sheep case cards, a 16 week plan with illustrated notebooks, Code of Professional Conduct practice, and OSCE practice stations with examiner checklists, a mock circuit, viva questions and calculation drills. It is an independent study aid, so use it alongside the RCVS guidance and reading list, not instead of them. You can try it free for 48 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the RCVS Statutory Membership Exam?
It is the RCVS exam for overseas vets whose qualification is not recognised, made up of written papers followed by a practical OSCE.
Is the RCVS exam multiple choice?
The written stage is: the clinical papers use best-of-five multiple-choice questions, alongside an open-book Code of Professional Conduct paper. The second stage is a practical OSCE. Check the current RCVS guidance.
How many questions are in the RCVS written papers?
The RCVS 2027 guidance describes 175 companion animal, 105 production animal and 87 equine questions, about 2 hours each, and an open-book Code paper of about 2 hours 15 minutes. Confirm the numbers in the guidance for your exam year.
How long are the OSCE stations?
The RCVS guidance says stations normally last 15 or 20 minutes, and the time is stated in the OSCE instructions.
When is the RCVS written exam held?
The RCVS has described it as held in March with a resit in May. Check current guidance for exact dates.
Can I resit part of the RCVS exam?
Yes. If you do not pass every area, the RCVS allows you to resit the written papers you did not pass instead of the whole exam.
