Who can sit the RCVS Statutory Membership Exam: eligibility, English and documents

Updated 20 October 2026

The SME is the route to the UK register for overseas vets whose veterinary degree the RCVS does not recognise. This page summarises what the RCVS asks for. Check the current guidance before you apply.

Who it is for

English language

The RCVS asks for IELTS Academic with at least 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component, or the OET with at least grade B in each component. You are exempt if your degree was taught and examined entirely in English.

Documents for your intention to sit

Visas

You may need entry clearance to enter the UK for the practical exam or to see practice. Check the UK government and RCVS guidance well before the OSCE.

The standard

The exam is set to the RCVS Day One Competences, which describe what a vet should know and be able to do on graduation.

Frequently asked questions

What IELTS score do I need for the RCVS exam?

The RCVS asks for IELTS Academic 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component, or OET grade B in each component, unless your degree was taught and examined entirely in English.

Can I sit the SME if I already work in the UK?

The SME is for overseas vets who are not on the RCVS register. Those already on the register are not eligible.

What are the Day One Competences?

They are the RCVS description of the knowledge, skills and attributes expected of a new graduate, and the SME is set to that standard.
