How should I use an ICVA NAVLE Self-Assessment?

Prepared 23 October 2026 · VetQ

An official NAVLE Self-Assessment can help you identify relative strengths and weaknesses. Decide in advance how you will use the feedback and allow time to act on it. Taking an assessment immediately before an exam may leave little opportunity to address a newly discovered gap.

Follow the assessment conditions

Read the current instructions and timing choices before starting. Choose conditions that match the question you want answered about your preparation. Record interruptions or outside help because those circumstances affect how you should interpret the result.

Read beyond the headline number

Look at the projected range and the available performance breakdown. A range expresses uncertainty rather than guaranteeing a result. Use weaker areas to generate learning tasks, but do not assume a short assessment has exhaustively measured every topic.

Turn feedback into a correction plan

Choose a few clear priorities and link each to reference teaching, fresh practice and a review date. Use another assessment only when there is a reason to remeasure progress. Repeatedly taking a familiar form may reduce its usefulness as an independent check.

Prepare a feedback-to-action sheet

Before taking an assessment, leave space for the main strengths, weaker areas, uncertainties and next actions. After receiving feedback, write a specific task beside each priority. Avoid broad instructions such as “revise everything.” Decide which reference or teaching session will address the gap, how you will practise it and when you will check it again. Keep conditions and interruptions beside the result so you remember the context later. The sheet should help allocate work rather than become a repeated search for a reassuring number. If the feedback is unclear, seek clarification from the provider rather than inventing a meaning for the report.

Check your understanding

An assessment identifies a weak area you have avoided. Is the next step necessarily another assessment?

Read the answer and reasoning

Usually the immediate need is teaching and targeted practice. Reassessment becomes more useful after you have acted on the feedback and want to check whether the change transferred to new material.
