BCSE tutorials: what should a useful tutorial teach?
Prepared 23 October 2026 · VetQ
People use “BCSE tutorial” to mean two different things: a lesson about veterinary knowledge and an orientation to the test software. You may need both. A teaching video does not replace practising the official interface, and an interface tutorial does not teach the syllabus.
Choose lessons with a clear learning objective
A focused tutorial should name the problem it solves: interpreting azotemia, calculating a dose or comparing drug mechanisms. By the end, you should be able to solve a new example. An hour of broad slides may feel productive without changing what you can explain.
Use an active viewing routine
Attempt the opening case before watching the answer. Pause to make a prediction, write the reasoning in your own words and try another question afterwards. Save a brief note about the concept you missed rather than transcribing the entire video.
Find interface material through official exam pages
Use the AVMA or NEB BCSE information pages to locate current familiarisation resources. Follow their links rather than assuming a commercial video reproduces the exam software. Check navigation, image handling and any available alternative question formats before test day.
Turn a tutorial into a small lesson
Before watching, write one learning question at the top of a page. Under it, leave space for the explanation, a common trap and a changed example. During the lesson, fill those spaces in your own words. Afterwards, close the video and solve the changed example without replaying the answer. If you cannot, identify whether a prerequisite term or a reasoning step is missing. Rewatch only the relevant segment and try again later. Save the lesson title beside the corrected concept so you can return to it efficiently. This routine produces a usable learning record rather than a large folder of videos marked as watched.
Check your understanding
You watched three hours of lectures and recognise the lecturer’s examples. How can you check whether the tutorials helped?
Read the answer and reasoning
Try an unfamiliar case without notes and explain the answer. If you cannot do that, return to the missing reasoning and practise it rather than immediately watching more videos.
